Big Rock Heritage Site
The RM of Buffalo name derives its name from the Buffalo that roam the prairies. Situated on SW-17-42-20-W3 close to Highway 787, is a huge rock which was dropped by a receding glacier, it became very important to the pioneers and First Nations alike. When the first settlers travelled West from Fort Battleford they reached the North Saskatchewan escarpment, a vast open prairie lay before them. Travelling west on the Sounding Lake Trail they passed the "Big Rock", a directional landmark on the trail. The first settler in this area was Dr. Robert Ovens, homesteading on SE-20-42-20-W3 in 1903. In the next few years settlers took up homesteads in what was to become the Rural Municipality of Buffalo #409 which comprised of townships 40, 41 & 42 in Ranges 19, 20 & 21.
